Viscosity is a fluids resistance to flow. In everyday terms this mean its "Thickness" or "Internal Friction"
Modern engine oils are multigrade viscosities which means that the oil meets certain low-temperature and high-temperature requirements simultaneously. Mono grade engine oils were commonly used prior to multigrade oils being available. Many manufacturers recommended a lighter grade such as Mono 30 (SAE 30) in colder winter months and a heavier Mono 40 or 50 (SAE 40 & SAE 50) grade in the warmer or summer months. Many vehicles can substitute a multigrade oil for a monograde oil especially those that ran summer and winter grades of oil.
